Raw Video: Harley, Officials Urging Drivers To Stay Alert Watch Out For Motorcycles During Harley's 105th Katie DeLong
Aug 28, 2008 -- MILWAUKEE - The Harley-Davidson 105th anniversary officially kicked off Wednesday, and bikers rolled into Milwaukee to celebrate. Harley-Davidson wants to make sure riders and drivers stay safe on the road. Because of the hundreds of thousands of Harleys that are rolling into town for the 105th anniversary, roads are packed, and that means people in cars and on bikes need to keep their eyes open. The bikes are back in town, and unfortunately, sometimes that can lead to crashes. Already Wednesday Milwaukee police say a biker ran a red light and hit a semi. That driver's in stable condition. Dean Akey knows all about bike accidents. He nearly lost his life in a crash four years ago. "There were over 100 bikes that went by and stopped, but not a one of them had any kind of training, had any kind of equipment with them," Akey said.
That's why he formed the Rescue Riders. They hold re-enactments to teach people what to do before medical help arrives. "The first thing we train everyone on is securing the scene. Make sure not only the victim, but the responder is visible. The last thing you want to do is run out in the street and get hit by another vehicle," Akey said. If you drive a car, remember, there could always be a bike next to you over the next few days. "Drivers in Milwaukee need to use a lot of extra caution and patience when they're driving around motorcyclists," Milwaukee Police Sgt. Mark Stanmeyer said.

You shouldn't do anything on the scene of a crash unless you've been trained, but this kind of training could save someone's life. "With the increase we see in fatalities we need to take care of our own, take care of other people on the road as well," Sgt. Stanmeyer said. Milwaukee police say the most common accident they see is caused by cars turning left in front of motorcycles, so be careful out there. |
